Anxiety is a normal response to stressful situations and can be a benefit to many situations, producing a greater drive to get things done in a timely manner. However, for some individuals, anxiety can become overwhelming and if the individual has challenges in controlling it, may lead to negative effects on daily living. There is a wide variety of anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorders. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness experienced in the United States.
While many theories for the causes of anxiety disorders exist, most researchers in the field believe anxiety disorders are likely the result of a number of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Unlike the temporary anxiety that occurs when a deadline is looming, an anxiety disorder is anxiety lasting longer than six months and becoming harder to cope with, making proper treatment necessary. While each of the anxiety disorders has differing symptoms, these symptoms tend to revolve around extreme, excessive and irrational fears and dread.
Anxiety disorders rarely occur alone. Many individuals who struggle with anxiety disorders also suffer from mental illnesses such as depression, drug or alcohol abuse and/or bipolar disorder. This is why treatment of anxiety disorders must address all co-occurring disorders rather than simply focusing upon anxiety disorders alone. While anxiety disorders can feel entirely overwhelming, there are safe and effective treatments available to help individuals struggling with these debilitating disorders. Prompt and proper treatment and management of anxiety disorders will allow most individuals who struggle with these conditions to live a happy, productive, and fulfilling life.

Treatment Options for Anxiety Disorders at Park Royal Hospital
At Park Royal, we’ve learned the best way to treat anxiety disorders is through a variety of therapeutic approaches, experiential treatments, and medication management. When you come to us, we’ll spend a great deal of time getting to know you. We’ll perform a complete medical and psychiatric examination in order to obtain the best understanding of your personal challenges, co-occurring disorders, and other factors we need to provide the compassionate care you require.
Medication may be used at the beginning of your stay with us in order to reduce the symptoms you’re struggling with and manage any co-occurring disorders so you can best participate in the therapeutic process. Sometimes, medication is only used for a short while, until you are better able to manage your emotions and then the medication is tapered off. Other individuals may need longer-term medication management to treat co-occurring disorders or continue to control anxiety symptoms. In addition to medication management, we also offer a wide variety of therapies designed to treat every facet of your life.
Group therapy is the primary form of therapy we use at Park Royal Hospital as we’ve learned the support of others is crucial to healing. In our therapeutic groups, you’ll be able to connect with others facing similar challenges so you can see you’re not alone in your struggles. We offer both process-based and psycho-educational groups in order to teach you more about your anxiety disorder, co-occurring illnesses, relapse prevention, and coping skills.
Individual therapy is a time for you to focus solely upon your struggles with the compassionate ear of a therapist trained in anxiety disorders. In individual therapy, you’ll have the undivided attention of a therapist in order to work through problems you’re not comfortable sharing in group and difficulties you’re facing.
At Park Royal, we aim to include loved ones in your recovery as much as we can. We offer family sessions to allow time for you and your loved ones to discuss anxiety disorders, the treatment you are receiving, as well as ways in which your loved ones can assist you in your recovery. We’ll also allow your loved ones the opportunity to discuss the ways in which your anxiety disorder has impacted their lives and provide local community resources for continued healing for your loved ones.
As we are a holistic treatment center, we offer a number of other therapeutic methods that focus on treating other aspects of your life. These may include:
- Occupational therapy
- Structured activities
- Leisure time
- Recreational programs
- A.A. and N.A.
Continuing Care – What Happens Next?
As your time with us draws to an end, we’ll work with you to devise an aftercare plan meeting your continuing needs and allowing for continued healing. Throughout your stay, you will work with the discharge team so they know you well and will work hard to address your ongoing needs.
Many individuals opt to step-down from our inpatient program and into our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which provides the same types of services you’ve been receiving throughout your stay with us. Other individuals may feel as though they’ve made enough progress throughout their stay to discharge to a stable home environment. In the event you are discharging to your home, we will work with local providers to find an appropriate therapist for you. We’ll also work to connect you and your loved ones with available community resources to allow for continuation of care and support as you resume your life, filled with hope and joy about the future.
